I hope you all had a chance to watch some of the carnage on ESPN last night. My neck hurts this morning and I think it's from watching Steve Slaton run up and down the field.
It's a wonderful time to be a Mountaineer.
As for Survivor, it is resting comfortably on my Tivo and we will watch it this weekend.

Are you painting Dr. Suess characters on the WVU locker room walls too? I haven't seen a top team this babied in a while. Marshall (#103), Eastern Washington (Division 1-AA), Maryland (#44), at ECU (#99), at Miss. St. (#87), not to mention that brutal Big East (#6 Conference) slate. They are in a great position to run the table and either get left out or blown out in the BCS title game.
[note: there are only 119 teams in D-1, ratings from SI.com]
Hello, wet blanket. How many points would you like WVU to win by over this schedule of teams? I'll call the athletic dept and see what can be done. Would a 40 point victory over the so-called #44 have been better? Honestly, I think WVU could have accomplished that if they knew it was necessary.
If the schedule keeps an undefeated WVU team out of the Fiesta Bowl, then us WVU fans will just have to live with that, just as the rest of the country has to live with our schedule.
Reminder that schedules are made 5 and 6 years in advance. At the time, Maryland was a much better team, plus Miami, Boston College and Virginia Tech were on the slate. Mississippi State was added the same year they beat Spurrier's Gators. Who knew they would suck so bad 5 years later? After the Governor forced us to play Marshall and Buffalo backing out in Feb '06 (bastards), forcing 1AA Eastern Washington in, this is what's left.
You might want to check the out of conference records for all the BCS conferences (including your claim about the Big East being #6). The Big East is 11-2 this year out of conference. That ranks first.
Now, of course I won't say that the Big East is as tough as the SEC or the ACC; it's not. But considering what the conference has gone through in trying to keep itself together after the date rape the ACC laid on it, give it some time and thought before bashing it.
Mark my words: At some point in the next four weeks, 4 of the 8 Big East teams will be ranked in the top 25 (WVU, UL, Pitt, Rutgers, yes Rutgers). That's half of the "weak" conference that will be ranked. If Louisville beats Miami Saturday, two of them will be in the top ten. I don't know if Pitt and Rutgers will still be ranked when we play them at the end of the season because they have to play each other and Louisville, but the Big East is not the joke everybody wants to make it out to be.
As for your last comment, who would blow WVU out this year? Who in the NCAA would blow us out? WVU's defense is young and needs to mature, but I suspect it will by the end of the year. Nobody will stop the offense. Ohio State would probably beat WVU if the two teams played today, but WVU would still rush for 300 yards and score much more than Texas did. Everybody WVU plays knows what's coming and yet they can't stop it. This includes Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, with their nationally ranked defense. Some people will say WVU can't throw the ball. How do you know that? I happen to think they can, but don't have to. We may get outscored in a BCS game, but nobody will blow this team out unless both Pat White and Steve Slaton go down and out with injuries.
While I keep my WVU rhetoric to a minimum on the Undaground because most of my readers probably don't care, I'm happy to debate this matter any further. Perhaps you could start by telling me which team you support.
Honestly, I'd love for WVU to play a tougher schedule this year, but it's simply not possible. It's frustrating when the rest of the country attributes our success to the ease of our schedule. It will continue to be frustrating when we are hurt by the schedule when a one-loss team is ranked ahead of us or we are the odd team looking out. If we go undefeated and don't go to the Fiesta Bowl, I'll take an Orange or Sugar BCS win and a 13-0 season. I don't give a sh*t what the Coaches or AP poll says then, I'll buy me and my boy a WVU National Championship t-shirt and we'll wear them with pride.
Let the season play out before you let Sports Illustrated tell you who's good and who's not. What will you say if Maryland beats Georgia Tech and Florida State?
Remember way back when, when Penn State played a "weak" schedule and had no chance against Miami in the National Championship? What happened that time?
Kind of scary that White and Slaton are sophomores, huh? Actually, about 15 to 16 of the 22 starters will be back next year. And guess what, the schedule's easy then, too.
Dear Mr. Undaground,
I don't think there's much to debate as you agree with my main points...that WVU will unfortunately not be tested by this schedule, and that lack of schedule strength may keep them out of the BCS title game.
The main disagreement was over the possibility of WVU getting blown out in the title game. You asked who could do that? I'll take your advice and "let the season play out" before naming the team(s).
You have to admit though that WVU football has come a long way (and possibly gotten ahead of itself) if a Mountaineer fan is offended at the suggestion that they might finish #2 in the country.
Schedules are made up years in advance? Fair enough...I've programed my blackberry to remind me to bug you about WVU's schedule strength in 2012. As for this year...Buffalo backed out huh? Well, no wonder the schedule's soft. And here I thought Buffalo could only move forward.
As for bashing the Big East, I simply listed the conference preseason rank from good old SI (I thought "Sports Illustrated" would carry more weight than the opinion of a guy named "wet blanket"). As you know, the official BCS rankings aren't released until later in the season, so we'll both have to wait and see what the great and powerful BCS computer thinks of WVU and its little conference that could.
[The Big East is 16-5 non-conference, but only 12-5 vs. D1-A opponents, 3-4 vs. +.500 teams, and 0-2 vs. currently ranked teams]
FYI, my alma mater's team is also 3-0, but I know they aren't very good...even if two of those wins came against the Big (Bad) East.
Hey wet blanket...
Sorry about Notre Dame. Better sooner than later I guess.
I will continue to pull for Wake Forest once they start playing other ACC teams.
Since Louisville beat a ranked team that has since been knocked out of the top 25, I think that should count.
Louisville is good.. I hope Brohm is back for our game because a win over them just got a little bigger.
Now that Notre Dame is on the way to at least 2 losses, the 2nd place Big East team is going to a very crappy bowl. (Notre Dame will play in the Gator Bowl).
Also, when did you get a blackberry? You don't strike me as a blackberry user.
I see the Undaground's powers of deduction haven't been dimmed by age or impending fatherhood. You correctly solved the riddle of my identity (with only one clue), and correctly guessed that I don't have a blackberry (some of my jokes are so subtle they're not even recognizable as jokes). Sorry for the adversarial tone...I thought the Undaground could use a good villain. As a reality show viewer like yourself knows...it's all about conflict.
I like the adversarial tone. You're right, I do need a villain here and there. I've thought about a Tony Clifton character in the comments section, but I'm too lazy to do it properly. Maybe some day when I have more free time... Ha!
I guess if I'm ever feeling saucy, I can just post about politics or religion and the villains will come-a-runnin.
